A reason to smile can be found in every minute of your day. There’s a beautiful sunshine, a vivid row of flowers, a colorful toothbrush that brings a smile to your face. This simple yet powerful emotion, joy, was the principal inspiration behind the design of Colorful Curls Edition of toothbrushes by Swiss based 3D illustrator and animation director Roman Bratschi.
His creations are often inspired by natural shapes, forms and patterns reimagined into playful and almost otherworldly 3D illustrations. With 15 years of artistic experience under his creativity belt and an expert eye for complementary colors, his simple and simultaneously intricate designs are full of effortless joy and beauty.
What was your path to becoming a designer?
3D design has always been a passion of mine. I was always doing it as a hobby, but now it turned into my fulltime job. Before that I was working in standard graphic design.
What projects do you usually work on? What do you enjoy the most?
Everything. (smiles) From animation to stills, from packaging to POS, from social media posts to global campaigns.
For me, it doesn’t matter what my design is finally used for. What I enjoy the most is when I can just explore and experiment with an idea I have in my mind. Usually, it turns out differently than what I was going for and that makes it even more interesting to me.
What inspires you?
Everything close to nature. It can be a pattern, a texture, or an organic shape.
What are your daily rituals that you can't imagine your day without?
I don’t have anything in particular. But in order to work, I need music. It is playing all the time when I’m working.

What’s the idea behind your special edition of toothbrushes? What did you want to express?
Joy.
How did you choose the colors?
The colors needed to match the artwork. And I think it’s super cool to have a brush head with so many colors.

The CS 5460 Colorful Curls Edition – a package of two ultra-soft toothbrushes with a design by Roman Bratschi – is now available in our e-shop.
It was part of an exploration of how to simulate cloth in 3D software. The biggest challenge for me was getting the nice elegant curves just right.
Did you know Curaprox before the collaboration? If yes, how did you perceive the brand?
Yes. I knew the brand before and as a person who likes to see colorful things, the colored toothpaste packaging definitely caught my attention.
Is there any dream product that you would like to collaborate?
Cars, fragrances, and high jewelry.
